The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Private First Class Thomas J. Duffy, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at Fort Benning, Georgia on 14 April 1969. Private Duffy lost his life in a successful attempt to save the life of a fellow soldier, who was attacked by an individual wielding an ax. Private Duffy unselfishly came to his aid in the ensuing conflict and was struck a fatal blow. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, in the dedication of his service to his country, Private Duffy has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
