The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Dennis N. Moro (ASN: ER-28640710), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 28 June 1968 at approximately 1530 hours while he was on duty in the battalion motor pool during a tactical exercise. At this time he saw a live CS grenade rolled underneath a 4500 gallon gasoline tanker. The intense heat from this grenade ignited a gasoline hose attached to the tanker truck. Private Moro observed what had happened, and, although he was not wearing a gas mask nor equipped with any protective clothing or equipment, he quickly obtained a fire extinguisher from a nearby vehicle and, at the risk of bodily injury and even death, entered the dense cloud of CS chemical smoke, extinguished the flame, and kicked the burning grenade from underneath the gasoline tanker. By his bold and audacious actions he prevented an explosion of the loaded tanker truck that would have engulfed other nearby vehicles. Approximately 20 men working in the multiple area owe their safety to Private Moro’s courageous action. Private Moro’s willingness to risk his life, by his cool and courageous action, and with complete disregard for his own safety, undoubtedly prevented of terrible tragedy. His quick thinking and selfless concern for the safety of his comrades reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
