Department of the Army, General Orders No. 38 (September 18, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Elmer B. Boughton (ASN: US-54438215), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. On the afternoon of 28 May 1967, Specialist Four Boughton, Troup A, 3d Squadron, 17th Cavalry distinguished himself while riding as a passenger on one of two helicopters involved in an accident while flying in a firepower demonstration at Dorrets Run Range, Fort Knox, Kentucky. During the portion of the demonstration involving the helicopters, Specialist Boughton’s aircraft crashed to the ground and began to burn. After successfully exiting the aircraft and grounding his equipment a safe distance from the burning ship, Specialist Boughton returned to give assistance to personnel still trapped in the aircraft. Knowing full well the danger involved, and suffering burns as a result of his action, Specialist Boughton succeeded in entering the helicopter and assisted in removing a passenger to safety. This action undoubtedly saved the life of the crew chief. Specialist Boughton showed great courage in returning to the burning aircraft and, oblivious of the fire, persisted in his endeavors until all of the crew were free of the helicopter. His disregard for his own safety was evident. Specialist Boughton’s actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit in the United States Army.
