Department of the Army, General Orders No. 36 (September 14, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Charles A. Henderson (ASN: RA-20600202), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 54th Infantry, near Hollfield, Germany on 25 October 1965 while involved in local unit maneuvers. When Sergeant Henderson saw a wrecked and burning truck, he rushed at the scene to render all possible assistance. The truck was engulfed in flames. With complete disregard for his personal safety and ignoring the danger of a gasoline explosion he unhesitatingly approached the vehicle and with two other noncommissioned officers evacuated the thirteen injured persons. Despite the intense heat and the imminent threat of explosion, he remained at the scene until all persons were safely evacuated. Seconds later the truck exploded and was completely engulfed in flames. Sergeant Henderson’s prompt and heroic action in this emergency is in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
