The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Kerry D. McFate (ASN: RA-24908721), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 16 October 1966 at Coleman Barracks, Mannheim, Germany. While fighting a fire in Building 16-H, Specialist McFate discovered that a fellow soldier was missing and presumably inside the burning building. Knowing that the firemen had evacuated the basement, unable to reach the fire due to the intense heat and smoke, Specialist McFate, disregarding his own personal safety, ran into the basement and discovered the missing man unconscious and lying partially inside the burning room. He called for assistance and had dragged the victim from the room and down the hall before more help arrived. Specialist McFate’s quick response in an emergency situation, without regard for his own personal safety, reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army. [This award supersedes award of the Army Commendation Medal awarded to Specialist McFate for heroism on 16 October 1966 as announced in General Orders Number 80, Headquarters, SEVENTH Army Support Command, dated 21 December 1966.]
