Department of the Army, General Orders No. 16 (April 4, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Robert E. Christie (ASN: RA-14799482), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. On 20 August 1966 at Howard Air Force Base, Canal Zone, at approximately 1845 hours, after having witnessed a collision between a motorcycle and passenger car wherein two Panamanian Nationals had incurred serious injury, and were in imminent danger of being burned to death, Specialist Christie entered the intensely hot flames of the impact area to effect removal of one of the victims. When his initial efforts were thwarted by the intense heat and degree of burns sustained by the victim, Specialist Christie without hesitation and with utter disregard for his own personal safety nevertheless remained in the raging inferno and persisted in his attempts to save the victim from a fiery death. By so doing, Specialist Christie was himself continuously exposed to the danger of being burned alive or suffocation. With subsequent assistance from a fellow soldier, Specialist Christie was successful in removing the victim to a safe area and rendering aid and comfort until the arrival of medical personnel. The raw courage, great determination, and complete disregard for personal safety and well being exhibited by Specialist Christie reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
