Department of the Army, General Orders No. 40 (December 9, 1965)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class [then Private First Class] William B. Zerbe, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters Company, 35th Engineer Battalion (Construction), Fort Lewis, Washington, on 15 October 1964 at Priest Rapids, Columbia River, Washington. When Specialist Zerbe heard calls for help coming from the rapids, he immediately went to the aid of a man who was struggling in the icy turbulent waters of the Columbia River after his boat had capsized. With complete disregard for his own safety and despite the fact that he was not a strong swimmer, Specialist Zerbe plunged into the dangerous river with an air mattress, succeeded in reaching the victim, and towed him to the safety of the shore. Specialist Zerbe’s heroic conduct, prompt actions, and deep concern for his fellow man are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. [This award supersedes the award of the Army Commendation Medal to Specialist Zerbe for heroic action on 15 October 1964, as announced in General Orders Number 3, Headquarters Fort Lewis, Fort Lewis, Washington, dated 17 January 1965.]
