(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Technical Sergeant Charles T. Walther, United States Air Force, was awarded the Airman’s Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Detachment 4, Pacific Air Rescue Center. Technical Sergeant Walther exhibited selfless heroism after an A-1H aircraft swerved off a runway and overturned, trapping its Vietnamese pilot inside. The cockpit was completely sunken in the mud. The fuel tanks had been ruptured and fuel was spread over the area. With a comrade, he dug for the cockpit with his bared hands to get air to the pilot. The two men continued in desperate efforts and kept the air passage open, saving the life of the Vietnamese pilot until a crane arrived to raise the aircraft and save the pilot.
