The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Carl E. Williams (ASN: 34432446), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 197th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 August 1944, in France. While making a movement forward, Corporal Williams’ battery was attacked by a strong enemy force from well-entrenched positions along the route of march. While the battery assumed positions with its primary weapons, Corporal Williams proceeded to the flank with an open weapons carrier armed with a fifty caliber machine gun. Despite a wound received, he remained at his post. He succeeded in neutralizing the fire of the anti-tank gun and also knocked out a machine gun crew. Corporal Williams’ gallant and intrepid stand reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
