The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles W. Moncrieff, Jr. (ASN: 0-363549), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1944, in Germany. During an attack, when Captain Moncrieff’s company became disorganized from enemy booby traps, mines, and fire, he went out in the extremely dangerous area and, by his bravery and exhortation, succeeded in reorganizing the men and regained the momentum of the attack. After leading his men into an enemy town, he assumed the most forward position in the assault on an enemy strongpoint in a railroad station. His great gallantry was largely responsible for destroying all enemy resistance. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Moncrieff reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
