The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert J. Ramberg (ASN: 0-1180672), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 January 1945, in Belgium. First Lieutenant Ramberg was the leader of a forward observation party which was discovered by the enemy and subjected to intense artillery and small arms fire. Although added rocket fire came extremely close, one round of which killed a member of the party, he remained steadfast, calling for artillery fire and giving the infantry support. By his gallant action, First Lieutenant Ramberg was able to aid the infantry in accomplishing its mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Ramberg, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
