The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John J. Prejean (ASN: 0-1296900), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 September 1944, in Holland. Captain Prejean was serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company engaged in a sustained offensive drive against the enemy. Captain Prejean was ordered to attack with his company across open country in which the enemy had well defended dug-in positions and good observation of the movement of our forces. While personally leading his company in the assault, Captain Prejean was wounded, but valiantly refused to allow himself to be evacuated, remaining with his company despite intense pain of his wounds until the objective was secured. The outstanding gallantry and determined fighting spirit exhibited by Captain Prejean are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Armed Forces.
