The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Albert J. Polo (ASN: 32819098), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action on 28 August 1944, in France. During a swift advance by the attacking companies, numerous enemy snipers were by-passed. A wire team of which Sergeant Polo was a member was following behind the attacking companies laying wire for communications lines between the forward observation post and the battalion command post when enemy artillery fire severed the lines. Sergeant Polo repeatedly went out to find and repair the breaks, although he knew the area was under observation by enemy snipers. Braving sniper fire, he had repaired the least break and was raising himself from the ground to return when he was fatally wounded by a sniper bullet. The courageous initiative and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Polo reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
