The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant William D. Craig (NSN: 0-88025), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Executive Officer of the U.S.S. HENRICO (APA-45) on 2 April 1945, during an assault operation against the enemy in the Okinawa area. After an enemy suicide plane bombed and crashed into the ship and raging fires ensued, he, as the senior surviving officer, assumed command. Demonstrating outstanding leadership and courage, he organized and directed the efforts of the fire fighting parties until the flames were extinguished and only slight damage had been sustained. His exemplary performance of duty, performed in the face of great personal danger, contributed immeasurably to the saving of the ship and its vital cargo. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
