The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Robert L. Cox (NSN: 3827183), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving as a Medical Corpsman with a Marine Amphibian Tractor Battalion of the FOURTH Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Okinawa Shima, in the Ryukyu Islands, on 20 May 1945. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Cox evacuated wounded from an area known as Sugar Loaf Hill, which was receiving heavy artillery fire, preventing any movement except by armored vehicles. Leaving his tractor, which was then waiting for casualties, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Cox, in full view of the enemy went to the aid of the many wounded men. He went from man to man rendering first aid and made countless trips bringing the wounded to safety. His courage, initiative and untiring efforts during this crucial period of the operation saved the lives of many men. His heroic action and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
