The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Charles E. Phetteplace (ASN: 31180720), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 July 1944, in the vicinity of ****, Normandy, France. Technician Fifth Grade Phetteplace, Aidman with Company K, 28th Infantry Regiment, continued to render aid to the wounded after his company found it necessary to withdraw from enemy fire. Disregarding his own personal safety, he remained to care for the wounded even after the area was occupied by the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
