Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2 (January 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Morris W. Goodwin (ASN: 0-535460), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, on 13 November 1944 in France. While leading his platoon against stubborn enemy resistance in the attack on Ancerviller, Lieutenant Goodwin’s unit was forced to seek cover from a concentration of artillery fire. He continued forward with only the leading squad and when it was no longer able to advance he went on alone, plunged across a small stream, surprised and captured four enemy soldiers. He brought the prisoners back across the stream and then led the squad forward into the enemy’s entrenchments. Using the trench system for concealment, Lieutenant Goodwin led the squad to the most outlying building of the town, captured two more enemy soldiers and subsequently cleared one fourth of Ancerviller of hostile forces. His outstanding courage and leadership reflect the highest credit on Lieutenant Goodwin and the armed forces of the United States.
