The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Serafino Mucci (ASN: 32343066), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action on 24 April 1945 in Italy. Private First Class Mucci learned from Italian civilians that the enemy was intending to set off demolition charges on a bridge ahead of our advancing unit. Private First Class Mucci immediately led his squad to a point about 75 yards from the bridge in an effort to prevent the enemy from destroying it. He then ran almost 100 yards through heavy enemy rifle and machine pistol fire to a point where he could cross the stream. This action diverted the attention of the enemy and permitted part of the squad to advance to the other side of the bridge. Although now under heavy enemy fire from several positions, Private First Class Mucci boldly stood up and ran to a position on the opposite bank where he could bring fire to bear upon the demolition crew under the bridge. Private First Class Mucci’s heavy and accurate fire drove the enemy from the bridge before they could complete their demolition and saved the vital structure. Private First Class Mucci’s courage and aggressive spirit reflect highly upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
