The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Michael A. Montich (ASN: 33806913), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 June 1944, near *****, France. Sergeant Montich was leading his squad along a hedgerow when it was suddenly subjected to intense fire from an enemy machine gun. With fearless initiative, Sergeant Montich crawled to within hand grenade range of the enemy position, jumped up and wiped it out with two grenades. By his daring action the advance of the squad was continued and many casualties were prevented. The conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty of this non-commissioned officer reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
