The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph Douglas Mitchell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 41st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the Nassau Beachhead action on the night of 30 June 1943 to 1 July 1943. Lieutenant Mitchell conducted himself in an outstandingly efficient and gallant manner. At the time of landing it became imperative that the regiment organize a line of defense in the face of a Japanese attack of unusual strength. Troops used to organize this defense line were unrelated detachments of shore engineers, personnel from regimental headquarters, personnel from a rifle section and the remnants of a rifle platoon. Lieutenant Mitchell, platoon leader, was very active in his assistance in forming this defense line. He demonstrated total disregard for his own personal safety by moving about freely in the dark jungle, up and down the defense line, instructing the personnel in their conduct during the night in contact with the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
