The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Third Grade John J. McGarey, Jr. (ASN: 33346445), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 November 1944 in France. During an intense enemy shelling which wounded the regimental surgeon, Technician Third Grade McGarey made his way along an open road under fire to render medical aid and to assist in evacuating the injured officer. He then continued along the same road for a distance of 150 yards to aid in evacuating a wounded soldier to safety. After all wounded had been cared for he voluntarily, at great personal risk, undertook to get a message through to the collecting calling for ambulances. His heroic endeavor and steadfastness under fire reflect highest credit on himself and the military forces of the United States.
