The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) John F. McDonough, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations during the period from 20 to 24 November 1943. After accomplishing a difficult flanking attack in the face of heavy enemy fire, Colonel McDonough led his Infantry battalion in the establishment of a beachhead. Under constant fire from well-concealed enemy elements he brought his mission to a successful conclusion. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
