The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Herschel D. McDaniel, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 6th Armored Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 January 1945 in Belgium. As tank driver of a forward observer tank, Technician Fourth Grade McDaniel went forward to help stem the enemy counter-attack. With utter disregard for personal safety he courageously maneuvered into position for most effective firing, although in full view of enemy armored and infantry forces. He placed accurate and deadly fire on the enemy, many times at point blank range. His gallantry was instrumental in the complete cracking of the counter-attack and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
