The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Ray McCrary, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 25th Armored Engineer Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, from 8 November 1944 to 4 March 1944. As an Engineer Squad Leader, Sergeant McCrary displayed conspicuous courage, leadership, and skill, proving an inspiration to his men. Near Belgium he led his men through continuous enemy artillery concentrations and repulsed enemy attacks against their position, even tough wounded. On 11 November 1944, he piloted a half-track across a bridge, under water, held by the enemy and ready for demolition, to determine its capacity to allow American tanks safe crossing. After crossing he laid down a barrage of fire for his platoon leader, who ripped the demolition wires. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant McCrary, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
