The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John E. Maus (ASN: 0-1166778), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 July 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Maus was serving as a forward observer with an artillery unit which was supporting the advance of attacking infantry. Heavy enemy artillery fire had stopped the advance of the attacking troops and in order to relieve the pressure on the infantry, First Lieutenant Maus moved out in search of a better observation post from which to direct his artillery fire. As he advanced he was painfully wounded, but realizing that it would be disastrous for anyone to attempt to evacuate him, he radioed his observer party to not attempt his rescue. Grievously wounded, he remained in this spot for approximately ten hours before the situation had improved and his evacuation was possible. The courage and unselfishness exhibited by First Lieutenant Maus on this occasion were a profound inspiration to his fellow officers and men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Maus, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
