The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Ralph E. Maness (ASN: 0-483610), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Chaplain with the 28th Infantry Division, in action during operations in the Hurtgen Forest, Germany, in November 1944. Chaplain Maness was a pillar of strength when an aid station was isolated and captured by the enemy, the supply of equipment cut off, and the evacuation of the wounded impossible except for a few parties of walking wounded. In addition to being of spiritual comfort, Chaplain Maness did not hesitate to perform whatever medical duties he was able to do. Realizing the situation, and without hesitation, he volunteered his own vehicle and driver to evacuate at least 50 patients. His good spirits, wise council, and unselfish devotion to duty made the stay for the men more bearable. Chaplain Maness refused to leave even when he knew that capture was inevitable. He became missing in action in subsequent action against the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Chaplain Maness, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
