The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert S. Kennemur (ASN: 34768477), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 January 1945 in France. When a tank destroyer was immobilized by enemy tank fire, one of the crew was killed outright, and the others, with the exception of Corporal Kennemur, were severely wounded. Although there was intense enemy fire of all kinds in the area and the crippled vehicle had begun to burn, Corporal Kennemur assumed the extremely difficult task of removing the wounded men from the burning wreckage, first placing each man beside the vehicle and then dragging and carrying them under heavy small arms fire approximately fifty yards to the rear. After making the men as comfortable as possible he found medical aid men who evacuated the wounded. The exemplary courage and devotion to the welfare of his fellow soldiers displayed by Corporal Kennemur reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
