The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert C. Jones (ASN: 0-2010865), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 April 1945, in Germany. Second Lieutenant Jones led a tank attack against fierce enemy resistance in an effort to recover lost vehicles from an enemy-held town. He dismounted on three occasions and moved about under intense small arms fire to reconnoiter routes of approach for the tanks of his platoon. Second Lieutenant Jones’ gallant actions aided materially in destroying enemy opposition and resulted in the capture of fifty prisoners. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Jones, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
