The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Cavalry) James Hume, Jr. (ASN: 0-448998), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 30th Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 April 1945, in Germany. Realizing the importance of reaching the Elbe River as rapidly as possible, Captain Hume took the lead and moved with his column through numerous road blocks and stubborn resistance. He gallantly exposed himself to the full view and murderous fire of the enemy to direct his men into battle formation and lead them in the capture of a well-defended town. Captain Hume’s heroic actions resulted in the rapid seizure of the town without a casualty. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Hume, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
