The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Lynwood M. Hisle (ASN: 35118955), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. On 16 August 1944, when his company was strongly counterattacked near Cape Cavalairo, France, Staff Sergeant Hisle picked up a light machine gun and ran to protect the left flank. Firing from the hip, he advanced through intense small arms fire that narrowly missed him and shells bursting 10 yards away, to a position 40 yards from the enemy. While shifting to an alternate position, Staff Sergeant Hisle was knocked down by the concussion of a rifle grenade, but he held off the Germans until friendly riflemen joined him. By his courageous stand, he prevented his company from being cut off and he killed 12 of the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Hisle, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
