The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Hoke S. Hargett, Jr. (ASN: 14141711), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 October 1944, in Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Hargett was serving as a radio operator for the Cannon Company of his regiment when it was subjected to an intense concentration of mortar and artillery fire preparatory to an enemy counterattack. Technician Fifth Grade Hargett was ordered by his commanding office to set up the radio so that artillery fire could be directed immediately upon the enemy, but it was discovered that the radio assistant with the other half of the radio had become separated from them during the enemy shelling. Technician Fifth Grade Hargett ran back through the heavy enemy shell fire and found the assistant and his part of the radio and led them to the forward position. As a result of Technician Fifth Grade Hargett’s heroic act, effective artillery fire was placed on the enemy, completely repulsing the counterattack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Hargett, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
