The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Stuart A. Grant (ASN: 0-349957), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 311th Field Artillery Battalion, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 July 1944 in France. After having repeatedly exposed himself to enemy small arms and artillery fire while successfully directing fire from the battery he served as liaison officer. Captain Grant took up a position in a deserted house to continue his mission. He remained at his post in spite of the fact that the building was under such heavy fire that he was thrown from his feet by direct fire from the enemy. His willingness to risk his own life in order to maintain this observation post, and his courageous demeanor under fire reflect highest credit on Captain Grant and the Armed Forces of the United States.
