The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Marcellus J. Newman, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 14 May 1864, while serving with Company B, 111th Illinois Infantry, in action at Resaca, Georgia. Private Newman voluntarily returned, in the face of a severe fire from the enemy, and rescued a wounded comrade who had been left behind as the regiment fell back.
