The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George A. Jackson, Jr. (ASN: 0-551750), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 25 January 1945, near Uhlwiller, France, when an enemy machine gun blocked the forward movement of his company, inflicting several casualties, Lieutenant Jackson led a detachment of seven men around the enemy right flank to within 35 yards of the gun from where they assaulted the position. Although struck in the head by a bullet and despite difficulty in moving, he continued to lead the assault, shot one German, and, with his detachment, knocked out the enemy position, accounting for seven Germans and enabling his company to advance.
