The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Sergeant] Edward W. Malan (ASN: 19153063), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 25 January 1945, at Schweighausen, France. During the enemy penetration of our main line of resistance at Schweighausen, France, Sergeant Malan volunteered to accompany his platoon leader in an attempt to lead one of his squads to safety through the encircling forces. After advancing 300 yards through intense artillery and mortar fire, he and the platoon leader were wounded by shell fragments. Although suffering from shock and badly wounded, Sergeant Malan proceeded to carry the officer to safety, engaging several of the enemy in a fire fight as he retreated to safety. Sergeant Malan’s indomitable courage and aggressive determination saved the platoon leader’s life and reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces.
