The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant William R. Inglehart (ASN: 36873060), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 25 January 1945 at Schweighausen, France. When a platoon of his Company was forced to abandon four quarter-ton trucks and trailers in making a withdrawal from an attack by a superior enemy force at Schweighausen, France on 24 January 1945, Sergeant Iglehart called for seven volunteers to help him recover the vehicles. Fighting his way through intense enemy mortar, machine gun, and small arms fire, Sergeant Iglehart led the men to the vehicles and succeeded in bringing each one back without loss. His daring initiative and courageous leadership reflect distinct credit upon himself and the armed services of the United States.
