The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain ((N Starr W. Jones (ASN: 0-1285249), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 6 January 1945, at Gambsheim, France, Captain Jones led a reinforced platoon of his company in a night attack against a superior enemy force over a marshy and wooded terrain traversed by many streams and canals. As a result of his leadership his platoon captured an enemy pillbox, put an enemy machine gun and mortar position out of action, inflicted several casualties, captured nine prisoners, and drove the enemy from the sector.
