Navy Federal Credit Union

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) Bernard Wayne Dibbert (ASN: 0-64231), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Major Dibbert distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 1 June 1965 while serving as an Advisor accompanying a friendly force on a motorized convoy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the course of the operation, the convoy was ambushed by a large enemy force armed with mortars and automatic weapons. When the troops dismounted, Major Dibbert took up a firing position and proceeded to move toward a hostile machine gun position that prevented the friendly force from maneuvering. After enemy mortar fire ceased, the enemy attacked and engaged in close combat. Major Dibbert personally dispatched three of the Viet Cong and was again proceeding toward the hostile machine gun position when he was mortally wounded. Major Dibbert’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
