The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Louis G. Young (ASN: US-56093367), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 and 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Pungchon-ni, Korea. On that night his company was bearing the brunt of fanatical enemy attacks that had penetrated to the main defensive lines. Private Young, although seriously wounded, continued to defend his position until the enemy penetrated his position and surrounded it. He then moved out in the face of murderous enemy fire and beat off the enemy to his rear with hand grenades and fire from his pistol. At that time Private Young was again wounded. Ignoring his painful wounds, he returned to his position and continued to fight until the enemy attack had been repulsed. The gallantry in action and determined devotion to duty displayed by Private Young on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
