The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Adjutant General’s Corps) Jack T. Young (ASN: 0-889129), United States Army, in action as Commanding Officer of the 2d Infantry Division Security Force , 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. The Division Command Post was endangered by the advance of a numerically superior enemy intent upon outflanking and destroying Division personnel and equipment. Major Young with two platoons of Republic of Korea soldiers unhesitatingly charged the hostile force and by skillfully employing guerilla tactics was successful in wrenching from the enemy the high commanding terrain. By this action Major Young was able to defend his prize position against several attacks and shattered the momentum of the enemy’s progress. Moving about the open terrain Major Young personally directed air strikes against the enemy and by his courageous action and personal example was largely instrumental in the successful defense of the command post area by his small group. The gallantry displayed by Major Young reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
