The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) George H. Young, Jr. (ASN: 0-36242), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 May 1951, in the vicinity of Habae-Jae, Korea, the 2d Battalion was attacking Hill 925 which was defended by a determined enemy. As the lead elements approached their objective, they were pinned down by intense enemy grenade and small arms fire. Major Young, realizing the importance of securing this vital terrain feature, voluntarily left the comparative safety of the battalion observation post and moved through heavy enemy fire to join the leading elements. Heedless of the heavy enemy fire, he moved about among the men offering encouragement. Inspired by his fearlessness and apparent disregard for his personal safety, the men abandoned their cover and continued the assault on the enemy. Although under intense fire at all times during this action, Major Young repeatedly exposed himself, advising and directing the action until the objective was taken. The outstanding gallantry and superior leadership displayed by Major Young reflects great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
