The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Roger Whiting (ASN: 0-32577), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 30 November and during the early morning hours of 1 December 1952, a friendly patrol made contact with a numerically superior hostile force in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. The patrol became disorganized and was forced to return to the friendly main line of resistance, leaving the patrol leader, who had been seriously wounded, in a concealed position. During the morning hours, another patrol was dispatched for the purpose of recovering the wounded leader. After making the recovery and beginning the return trip, the patrol was subjected to intense mortar fire, thereby becoming disorganized. Major Whiting, the Battalion Commander, was observing the patrol’s actions from the Battalion outpost. Major Whiting, observing the action from the Battalion outpost, sensed the gravity of the situation and the imminent danger to the patrol. He unhesitatingly and without regard for his personal safety rushed into the impact area and reorganized the patrol. He then placed himself at the rear of the evacuating group and directed them through the safety lane back to the main line of resistance. As a result of his quick and skillful evaluation of the situation, and complete control in evacuating the patrol under intense mortar fire, he saved the lives of many of his men. Major Whiting’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
