The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Tom W. Turner (ASN: 0-1323366), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. Lieutenant Turner was a member of a convoy which was attempting to penetrated an enemy roadblock. The convoy was halted by intense hostile fire on several occasions and the troops were forced to dismount to answer the enemy fire. In order to speed up the column, Lieutenant Turner exposed himself to the heavy hostile fire raking the terrain as he moved up and down the road directing men back to their vehicles and getting the convoy moving. An enemy rocket burst destroyed his vehicle and rendered him temporarily unconscious. Regaining consciousness and seeing that the column again was halted further down the road and unable to proceed under the deadly fire of an enemy machine gun, Lieutenant Turner rushed to the convoy, hastily organized a group of fifteen soldiers and led them in an assault on the hostile machine gun position. By his swift, determined and courageous action he succeeded in wiping out the enemy at that point which enabled the troops to continue their passage through the roadblock until they reached friendly positions. The gallantry and inspiring leadership displayed by Lieutenant Turner reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
