The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Maurice R. Tomlinson (ASN: 0-949857), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 and 21 May 1951 in the vicinity of Chalp-at-o, Korea. On these dates Lieutenant Tomlinson was a platoon leader of a rifle platoon leading an attack on a well-entrenched enemy on Hill 895. As they moved toward their objectives their route of approach was suddenly blocked by heavy automatic weapons and small arms fire, pinning the entire company to the ground. Lieutenant Tomlinson, with complete disregard for personal safety, moved forward against the well-entrenched and determined enemy, to a position where he was able to destroy a machine gun nest with his hand grenades, making it possible for the company to continue their advance on the hill and eventually seize the objective. The gallant leadership and selfless devotion to duty of Lieutenant Tomlinson reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
