The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] Andrew M. Sullivan (ASN: US-56074635), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 January 1952 in the vicinity of Ponggil-li, North Korea. On that date, Sergeant Sullivan was a member of a combat raiding party, whose mission was to probe enemy positions and capture prisoners. As the unit approached its objective, they came under heavy enemy fire. Pinned to the ground by the hail of missiles, the platoon was in danger of annihilation. Sergeant Sullivan, with complete disregard for personal safety, jumped to his feet and sprayed the enemy with withering bursts of fire from his automatic weapon. His inspiring display of courage enabled his unit to withdraw from their untenable position with a minimum of casualties. The outstanding gallantry displayed by Sergeant Sullivan is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
