The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Andrew Schneider (ASN: US-55265162), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sokkogae, Korea. On 8 July 1953, when Sergeant Schneider’s squad reached the center of a strategic outpost, it was halted by heavy machine gun fire from a fortified bunker. Despite heavy enemy mortar, artillery, and small arms fire, Sergeant Schneider left the comparative safety of his position and charged the bunker, throwing his grenades. After the grenades exploded, Sergeant Schneider closed in on the bunker and destroyed the gun crew with his rifle. This action enabled Sergeant Schneider’s squad to advance with few casualties. Later during the same action, Sergeant Schneider was wounded by enemy mortar fire but refused evacuation and was instrumental in encouraging his men during two enemy counterattacks. When Sergeant Schneider was ordered to withdraw his squad to a defensive position, he placed his assistant in command and remained behind to protect and effect the evacuation of the wounded. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Schneider reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
