The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Cavalry) William Francis Schless, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy near Pabalmak, Korea, on 11 February 1951. Captain Schless’ company had secured a vital hill from the enemy, but a barrage of enemy mortar fire forced back two of his platoons. Seeing one of his platoon leaders had been wounded, Captain Schless rushed forward and, exposing himself to enemy mortar and small arms fire, he led his men in a fierce hand grenade charge against the enemy to regain the position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Schless, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
