The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel (Air Corps) John Alexander Samford (ASN: 0-17206), United States Army Air Forces, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Deputy Chief of Staff of the EIGHTH Air Force from 12 December 1942 to 1 July 1943. Colonel Samford’s outstanding ability to organize and coordinate contributed materially to the successful execution of the mission of the EIGHTH Air Force, and his keen analytical mind never failed to grasp the broader concept of every problem. An indefatigable worker, no problem was too intricate for him to undertake, and the infinite care with which he undertook the solution of the vital problems presented to this Air Force was a source of great inspiration to all other members of the staff who had the opportunity to observe his work. His acumen, foresight, and sound judgment were of inestimable assistance to both the Chief of Staff and the Commanding General, and contributed materially to the successful operation of the EIGHTH Air Force in this area.
