The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Roy E. Malinowski (ASN: 0-959292), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 March 1951, in the vicinity of Kuram-ni, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Malinowski and his platoon had the mission to secure and hold a high hill. During the advance, the platoon was temporarily halted by heavy mortar and automatic weapons fire. Lieutenant Malinowski, realizing that the mission would fail unless the advance was resumed without delay, advanced to an extremely hazardous position from where he skillfully maneuvered his leading squads through the heavy hostile fire and led his men in a bold and aggressive charge toward the objective. As the attackers neared the top of the hill, they again were halted by intense grenade bursts. Completely ignoring his own safety, Lieutenant Malinowski led his platoon in a final assault with hand grenades and fixed bayonets, causing heavy casualties among the well intrenched and stubbornly resisting enemy. The gallant leadership demonstrated by Lieutenant Malinowski reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
