The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold Lowe (ASN: 0-2012448), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23-24 November 1951, Company F, 2d Battalion, while occupying defensive positions, near Kowang-San, Korea, was subjected to a heavy barrage of artillery and mortar fire with large numbers of enemy ground troops, armed with dynamite and Bangalore torpedoes, charging through their own artillery barrage toward friendly lines. Especially hard-hit was the Third Platoon, led by Lieutenant Lowe, which occupied the forward slope of a ridge, but courageously running from bunker to bunker, he regrouped his platoon and directed its fire upon the oncoming enemy. At one point along his fire-swept route, he was confronted by five enemy soldiers who had crossed the barbed wire entanglement. Killing them all with carbine and pistol fire, he then manned a machine gun whose crew had been killed or wounded, and slew six more of the foe who were attempting to blow a gap in the wire. These threats eliminated, he continued throughout the platoon area, reorganizing the unit and directing fire until the enemy withdrew. Lieutenant Lowe’s gallant and daring actions reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
